Catalogue Note

A hundred years ago Épisy was a favourite place for artists in France. Just a short distance from Fontainebleau, it had an attractive landscape and many other amenities, which Jackson enjoyed as much as his fellow artists. There was much to paint there, he wrote in his autobiography, the canal bordered with Picardy poplars, old farms, the gently rolling country, the barges towed by mules along the canal - all of it close enough at hand so that we could take our canvases out into the fields.
