Catalogue Note

MacDonald lived near the High Park area of Toronto and his small sketches were often inspired by this wild and uncultivated landscape in such close proximity of the city. Thoreau MacDonald notes on High Park, In those days, that district was a great stretch of open pine, oak and birch woods...The sketches he made were hardly larger than postcards, yet they are carefully designed and hold well. Here, using rich shadings of purple, Macdonald explores the masses of flowers jostling between the tall green and yellow grasses. Bold and striking colours and thick impasto lend a sense of weight and magnitude to a work of modest size.
