Catalogue Note

Shadbolt has said: "I am the kind of artist who is incurably eager for form. I don't find forms, they find me ready and willing to take them over. My job is resisting..."

Only Shadbolt's subject matter changes. When he lived in downtown Vancouver, he painted street scenes. When he moved to a beautiful treed area in suburban Capitol Hill, he turned to nature cycle subjects...In the same way, his visits to France, Italy and Greece have produced cycles of Mediterranean paintings, including this work.
