rectangular with curved outline, the front applied with gold tendrils and flowerheads set with shaped cabochon sapphires and centered by a sapphire carved with a Farnham crest below a crescent moon, the back similarly decorated and centered by a Sagittarius sign of a centaur archer, this motif repeated in the spring-loaded cigarette holder within, faceted oval pink tourmaline thumbpiece

Provenance

This case was presumably a gift to Paulding Farnham from his wife, Sarah Welles James Farnham, on his forty-second birthday.  The carved crest is that of Farnham, and the centaur motif on the reverse relates to Mrs. Farnham's wife's zodiac sign, a Sagittarius, as her birthday was November 26th.
