appears to be on the original stretchers, in the original frame. A paper label attached to the back of the unlined canvas states: The dwelling - with basement kitchen - sits among three beautiful weeping willows. The yard is enclosed in fences with smaller trees and plants inside. Before the front picket fence is shown a woman sitting side saddle on a horse while a man stands on the sidewalk back of a second horse. Acquired in New York in 1940. Jean Littman (Lipman) Collection.
Condition
The painting of the Butler Homestead in Brooklyn is in original condition – it is unlined and appears not to have been touched. There is one tiny chip of paint that missing from the extreme right side of the painting in the area of the white fence.
The frame is original.

Fort Hamilton is considered today as part of Bay Ridge. The neighbor is named for the United States Army garrison located there during the 19th Century to the present day.
