Catalogue Note

Barara Almquist has suggested the monogram JSD is for Jacob and Sarah Downing, married in 1777.  The bride was the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Drinker of Philadelphia.

Thomas Shields (1743-1819) was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and apprenticed to John Bayly in 1760.  In 1765 he opened a shop on Front Street, and in 1771 was "at the sign of the Golden Cup and Crown" (Quimby 1995, p. 447).  Shields owned property in Wayne County where he built a house and grist and saw mills.  His daybook for 1775-91 is preserved in the Downs collection, Winterthur.
