Condition

Overall good original condition. The chairs each show some evidence of fading from sun exposure, however both the frames and caning have acquired an even color and nice patina. The fading most pronounced to the rosewood inlay, which is consistent with prolonged sunlight exposure. Each chair with nicks, scratches and white paint residue concentrated to the backrests. The cane is in excellent condition with some minor rubbing and light discoloration consistent with age and use. An early and well matched set of Cow Horn chairs from a noted Jacobsen interior.

Catalogue Note

This superb set of "Cow Horns," which were produced soon after the chair made its debut in the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition of 1952, was selected by the interior designer Ellen Bisgaard for the dining room of a farmhouse designed by Arne Jacobsen. The entire complex of "Almegaarden," from Jacobsen's buildings and the agricultural machinery to Bisgaard's domestic interior, was enthusiastically received by the press as a modern update on traditional agrarian lifestyle.

Sotheby's would like to thank Dorte Slot for her assistance with cataloguing this lot.
