Description

  • each 88.5cm. high, 125.5cm. wide, 58.5cm. deep; 2ft. 10 ¾in., 4ft. ½in., 1ft. 11in.
each with a  later fossilised black and white mottled marble top above three drawers; rebacked

Provenance

Earls of Portsmouth, Hurstbourne Park, Hampshire.          

Acquired by present owner upon the acquisition of Hurstbourne Park, circa 1937.

Condition

The date of construction of thes commodes is between circa 1790 and 1820. Both the commodes are in good restored condition. The backs have later boards. The panels beneath the lowest drawer have been replaced on one commode. The sides of the commodes have repaired horizontal splits. . The lower two drawers on each commode have each had, at some stage, handles. These handles have now been removed and the small holes caused by them have been veneered over. There are a few filled in chips to the marquetry decoration and a few small patches to the crossbanded decoration A very handsome pair of commodes.
