Description
- wool
- Approximately 281cm. high, 330cm. wide; 9ft. 2in., 10ft. 1in.
woven with seated figure resting after the hunt, with his huntsman, at the side of a formal fountain within a woodland setting, within a four-sided gold and red frame pattern border with stylised clasp corners, later brown banded selvedge
Condition
The top of the tapestry has been folded under (concertina effect two folds approx. 13cm. high each), so that the height is reduced (by approx. 26cm) and the border is still visible. It can therefore be extended in height, once the lining is detached and extended. Repairs to the borders, and not woven with the tapestry. Repairs in inner bands. There are some areas of repair, which are largely to the areas of silk highlights. For example see the sky, where repairs are visible as different colours within sky clearly visible. Some weak areas of silks within highlights of clothing of seated figure and the waterfall. Silk repairs which are lighter in colour have been used within the fur of the hound in the foreground and the clothing highlights of the figures. Repairs to the borders in areas, visible as different colours, for example red repair to right corner of border, and small areas of mustard and copper colour within the borders. Green foliage in good overall condition.
This tapestry is lined with old linen and attached with old hoops. It is recommended that Velcro be added for hanging purposes in the future.
Overall stable condition. Very striking and decorative tapestry. Balanced colour and composition.
