Description

  • Ebonised wood, brass, enamel
  • 66cm. 26in. high
8-inch one-piece enamel dial with leaf and shell spandrels and well pierced hands, the engraved arch with subsidiary strike/silent and regulation dials flanking an enamel plaque signed John Cowell, Royal Exchange, the similarly signed six pillar three train fusee movement with deadbeat escapement, rise and fall regulation, trip repeat quarter chiming on a nest of eight bells and striking on a further bell, the backplate engraved with foliate scrolls around the signature, the case with bell top and flambeau finials, side carrying handles above wood foliate frets, female term and flower mounts to all four canted corners, on brass bracket feet,  

Condition

Dial and hands in very good original condition. Movement complete and running at time of cataloguing but would benefit from a clean. Csae in good condition with a few old minor cracks and marks. With pendulum, case key and a winder.

John Cowell was apprenticed in 1752 and Free of the Clockmakers' Company from 1759. He worked at Pope's Head Alley, Cornhill.
