Description
- Padouk, Rosewood, mahogany, gilt brass and leather
- 75cm. high, 122cm. wide, 62cm. deep; 2ft. 5½in., 4ft., 2ft. ¼in.
the inlay reserved with mahogany and outlined with tulipwood bandings, the frieze with three real drawers opposed by dummy drawers
Condition
In general neglected but original country house condition retaining its distressed leather inset to the top. Recommended that this is kept and restored as it is essential to the originality of the table. Dummy drawer side very sun faded. Escutcheons missing to two drawers and the central dummy drawer. One of the frieze mounts to the dummy drawer side nearly completely detached. General typical old marks and scratches. Lovely colour in parts and has the potential to restore very well.

Catalogue Note
The form of the present bureau plat relates to an 18th century bureau plat by François Oeben in the Residenz Museum, Munich, with a similarly shaped top, and similar floral marquetry to the frieze and legs with mounts, see H. D. Molesworth and John Kenworthy-Browne, Three Centuries of Furniture in Color, 1969, p.180, fig.300. A related bureau plat stamped EHB ( Edward Holmes Baldock) to the underside was sold Christie`s, London, July 9th 1998, lot 136 and a very similar example sold Sotheby`s, London, Important English Furniture, European Needlework and Textiles, 26th November 2003, lot 78.
