Catalogue Note

The depicted scene is a good example of the Roman taste for both real and imaginary views of Rome's ancient monuments. Giovanni Paolo Pannini (1691-1765) is probably the most celebrated artist of this movement, however, a number of Nordic artists, such as Jan Frans von Bloemen, called Orizonte (Antwerp,1662-Rome,1749), lived in Rome and worked in this style. All these artists included figures, animals and landscapes in their compositions to invest their work with more life and charm. The scene depicted here is executed in beautiful blue and brown tones in the style of Orizonte.
