Catalogue Note

The end supports on the present table are very similar to the doors on a pedestal sideboard illustrated in Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 1822, pl. 127 (See Pauline Agius, Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 1984, p. 142). The Regency style epitomised by the offered lot was promoted by the leading designer of the age Thomas Hope who published  Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, in 1807. His designs inspired a circle of followers including George Smith and Peter and Michaelangelo Nicholson whose patterns for furniture included similar elements to those featured here.
