Catalogue Note
Although the present lot has Irish provenance, painted tables of this type are typically associated with the work of George Seddon, founder of the firm of cabinet-makers which bore his name and which by the late 18th century had become the largest business of its kind in London. Seddon specialised in furniture of this type, establishing himself as the leading exponent of the use of painted satinwood. Examples of his work include a suite of furniture supplied in 1793 to Richard Clarke of Bridwell House, Devon, sold Sotheby's, London, 19 June 1981, lot 109 and 9 July 1993, lots 172-3. A demi-lune card table by Seddon painted with peacock feathers is now in the Ashmoleon Museum (illustrated Sotheby's, London, 20 November 1970, lot 190).
