Catalogue Note
George Cowles was apprenticed to Samuel Courtauld senior on 6 September 1751 and turned over in 1765 upon the latter's death to his widow, Louis Perina Courtauld. On 17 April 1768 at St. Martins in the Fields, Cowles married Judith Jacob, Mr Courtauld's niece, the daughter of his sister, Anne. At about the same time, Cowles and Mrs Courtauld entered a joint mark and they continued in partnership until in 1777 she entered a new joint mark with her son, Samuel junior (10 October) while Cowles a new mark on his own (30 October).
