Catalogue Note
woven with a triumphal procession with background buildings and woodland with formal fountain, all within a four-sided floral border, incorporating blue bows and vases, on brown ground, with further narrow inner and outer banded yellow and brown borders and brown selvedge
This tapestry could depict a specific Historical occasion, as the equestrian figure is followed by a figure holding a golden crown.
Alternatively it could be a Triumphal procession from an Old Testament subject, such as that of the Story of David, or that of Joseph. For comparable processions incorporating similar figural types with landscape and town frieze backgrounds and similar borders, see tapestries depicting the Triumph of Joseph, sold as Sotheby's, London, 11th March 1983, lot 7, and 11th February 1992, lot 4 respectively. Also see H. Göbel, Die Wandteppiche, 1928, Part II, Vol.ii, nos.266, for a late 17th century Aubusson weaving depicting the Triumph of David.
