Provenance
The monogram reads FC conjoined under an imperial crown for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian Joseph of Austria (1832-1867) and his wife whom he married in 1857, Princess Charlotte of Belgium (1840-1927), later Emperor Maximilian and Empress Carlotta of Mexico.

Catalogue Note
After the marriage, Archduke Ferdinand Max first served as Viceroy of Lombardy-Venetia, but he was removed by Emperor Franz Josef for his liberal views. He was then approached my Mexican monarchists, and in 1864 the couple became Emperor Maximilian and Empress Carlotte of Mexico. The Emperor was executed by firing squad in 1867, but Carlotta survived for another 60 years, residing in Trieste and Belgium but living increasingly in her own head.
The firm of Franz Schiffer & Sohn were named Imperial Court gold- and silversmiths in 1846; Franz Schiffer died in 1854, so these were made under his son Eduard.
