the slender oval tureen with brown basketweave sides and pink-glazed interior, the cover molded with a large grey sturgeon on a bed of ferns and leaves, indistinctly impressed diamond registration mark and letter E.

Condition

The tureen has a tiny chip and adjacent minor 1-in haircrack to the inside rim at one edge. The cover has a pin point flake to the glaze above the fish's head and a 1/2 firing crack at the edge below the fish's belly. The tureen is in overallgood condition.

Catalogue Note

A similar George Jones tureen is illustrated by Nicholas M. Dawes in Majolica, fig. 77, p. 48-49.  The tureens of this model, which featured either mackerel or salmon, were made in two lengths - 19 inches and 23 inches.
