Catalogue Note
The present mirror with its large proportions and deep frame shares affinities to a number mirrors and designs of mirrors by Thomas Chippendale and John Linnell. The combination of the lambs-tongue molding, fluting and beaded moldings to the oval frame relates to a mirror which Chippendale supplied to Sir William Constable for his house in Mansfield Street and illustrated in C. Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, p. 153, fig. 278. It also relates to a number of designs for mirrors by John Yenn, which he supplied to George III for the King's drawing room and Queen's music room at Windsor, circa 1795. The handling of the urn cresting and foliate swags and foliate apron relates to a number of designs by Linnell, particularly to a that of a mirror he designed fro William Wombwell, circa 1776 and illustrated in Helena Hayward, 'The Drawings of John Linnell in the Victoria and Albert Museum', The Journal of the Furniture History Society, 1969, vol. V, fig. 115
