Catalogue Note

George Hepplewhite declared in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, first published in 1788 that 'Hanging Shelves' were often wanted as 'Book-shelves' in closets or Ladie's rooms: they are also adapted to place China on'. A design by Thomas Chippendale published in 1753 in the first edition of his Director illustrates a similar set of shelves to the present example, No CXIII.
