Catalogue Note
This table is characteristic of the work of Thomas and William Wilkinson. The firm of Wilkinson and Sons was founded as a carpet and looking-glass warehouse by Joshua Wilkinson in 1766. By 1790 his youger son William and his cousin Thomas were in partnership, specialising in patent dining tables and by 1807 advertising a range of tables, covered by `the King's patent' that occupied 'a space considerably smaller than is necessary for the standing of any other dining table now in use'. The partnership ended in 1808 and William established his own business at 14 Ludgate Hill; Thomas continued at 10 Broker's Row until 1828. For a very similar example, see C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, 1996, p. 477. figs. 972-3.
