A Regency brass-mounted mahogany cellaret in the manner of Gillows circa 1810

the hinged fluted oval top surmounted by a reeded finial and opening to a well, the conforming case fitted with a drawer to the apron, the side panels centered by lion's mask handles, the whole raised on reeded supports continuing to turned circular tapering legs on casters.

Overall fair un-restored condition; beautiful quality, nice color and dry surface; the top with 11 age cracks along peaks of fluting and with 2 age cracks along center of fluting; slight warpage to top; hinge possibly replaced; the body with horizontal age cracks to the center of each panel over lines of construction; two age cracks to the troughs of the fluting; lions mask to right side slightly loose; handle to lefts side bent; shrinkage to veneers of panels; and with some losses to thin moldings at joins with reeded supports mainly to front panel at left side and part of right side, to the back panel at the left edge, and to the left side panel to the right edge; left side with chip to cockbeading approximately 1 inch in length; overall with old marks, scratches, scuffs and bruises; the brass banding to the apron tarnished and with extensive dirt and some dents, would benefit from polishing; lead lining lacking but with some remnants under neath the mahogany collar to the interior.

The present cellaret relates to a group of wine coolers or cellarets traditionally attributed to the Gillows firm.  The present cellaret differs slightly from the group in that it has straight cylindrical reeded supports as opposed to baluster-from reeded supports.  It is also interesting that the present cellaret has a drawer to the front apron.
