the semicircular top with flaps at the back and central removable section, above a conforming frieze and raised on tapering reeded turned legs, on casters.
Condition
Overall good condition; the top with a glossy finish; good color to timbers; sold mahogany top; flaps slightly darker in color probably due to slight sun-fading of front; the two-plank top with slight separation at join to right side, though stable; top with scuffs and scratches; slight nicks, wear and bruises to reeded edges of top; the frieze with age cracks to the veneers and with a patch to the back right corer and infilling to the back left corner; some repairs to veneers; legs in good condition with the usual minor bruises, scuffs and scratches.

Catalogue Note
This wine table was used for drinking after dinner in front of a fire. Originally fitted with a brass gallery hung with a curtain to shield those sitting at the table from the heat of the fire. An earlier example by Gillow is found at Lotherton Hall, Yorkshire; see C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, 1978, vol. II, pp. 376-7, fig. 494. Gillows supplied a similar table to Stephen Tempest for the dining room at Broughton Hall in 1813. Another by Gillows is illustrated in Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Woodbridge, 2008, p. 249, plate 247.
