- Lacquer
of elongated foliate shape, the domed cover carved through the thick layers of cinnabar lacquer with a central medallion depicting a scholar and his attendant in a landscaped garden setting, the sides of cover and box each with four panels finely carved with different flower sprays, the interior lacquered black (2)

Acquired in Europe in the 19th century.

Condition
The cover: The interior has a star crack approximately 2 1/2 inches long that has run into the rim. The rim with other fine cracks, two of which were caused by small chips. The head of the central figure has been reglued. Some repainting to the rim.
The box: The rim with one large chip 3/4 inch wide, and other small chips and frits to the surface. The foot rim also with small frits and chips. Some repainting to the lacquer.
