Description

  • Lacquer
of circular shape, the gently domed cover finely carved through the red lacquer to the buff ground with a widely-spaced and dynamic design of an open peony flower set against lush flowers and leaves, the sides of the box carved through to the ochre ground with matching  flowers against curled leaves, the interior and base lacquered a dark chocolate brown (2)

Condition

The cover has a 1/2 inch hairline crack. There are some light surface abrasions to the interior. In overall good condition.

The widely-spaced design on this box and cover still shows some of the stylistic elements more commonly found on lacquer designs of the late Southern Song period, as demonstrated on a black lacquer box and cover dated to the Southern Song, illustrated in The Colors and Forms of Song and Yuan China Featuring Lacquerwares, Ceramics and Metalwares, Tokyo, 2004, fig. 105.
