- Cloisonne Enamel
the square base of each decorated with lotus petals supporting an ornate ovoid stupa decorated with an enclosed lanca character and stylised lotus below a band of masks and hanging pendants, all reserved on a turquoise ground

Condition
The stupas are both in very good condition with the exception of some light scratches and nicks to the edges of the bases and light rubbing to the gilding.

H. Brinker and A. Lutz in Chinese Cloisonné: The Pierre Uldry Collection, Zurich, 1985, p. 279, suggest that the Qianlong emperor encouraged the manufacture of ritual objects in cloisonné enamel and commissioned several monumental cloisonné pagodas for the Summer Palace between 1764 and 1782, the largest being 293 cm. high, (ibid, pp. 60-61).
