Description

the metal blade cast with a wide groove on each side mounted with a zoomorphic gilt-metal bracket at one end, the shaped gilt-metal sword guard reticulated with two pairs of confronting dragons in pursuit of 'flaming pearls' on each side, the handle bound by brown cord and mounted by gilt-metal brackets at each end, the shagreen scabbard secured with two gilt-metal bands decorated with dragons and surmounted at the end with a similarly decorated gilt-metal mount

Condition

The shagreen scabbard is in good condition with only some minor cracking and a small area of peeling. The shagreen appears to be covered with a clear varnish to protect it. There is a little bit of white paint that has rubbed off on the scabbard, but can be removed. The blade is a bit oxidized and has light corrosion to the surface. The gilt-bronze fitting at the top of the blade near the sword guard is a later replacement. The gilding on the gilt-bronze is slightly worn. The inter-locking dragons on the sword guard are freely moving. The brown cord on the handle has an old patina and appears to be contemporary with the sword. The overall condition is good.
