Description

of cylindrical form, intricately carved in openwork with a bearded scholar leaning against a gnarled mulberry tree, accompanied by an attendant holding a bucket and a towel in front of a pavilion near a stream, all in a continuous rocky landscape with bamboo, wutong, and banana trees, the white stone speckled with lighter inclusions, fitted wooden end pieces

Provenance

A Private French Collection.
S. Marchant & Son Ltd., London.

Exhibited

Post-Archaic Chinese Jades from Private Collections, S. Marchant and Son Ltd., London, 2000, cat. no. 33.

Condition

There are minute nicks to the edges of the rims and carving due to the natural inclusions of the stone, and a 2mm flake to the lower edge; otherwise the incense holder is in very good condition. Please note that the stone is of a slightly more celadon colour than illustrated in the catalogue.
