Catalogue Note

The present piece is an exquisite example of plaque pendants that contain an auspicious inscription on one side and its pictorial representation on the other.  The symbolism of the gracefully carved lingzhi fungi, together with peach (symbol for longevity) and changchun (synonym for long life) flower is inscribed on the reverse, which reads ling zhi xian cao ying chang chun ('the magical power of lingzhi is reflected upon the representation of longevity').  The two seal characters wen wan at the end show that the pendant plaque was meant to be a scholar's curio.
