the cover deeply carved with a Buddhist Lion playfully gambolling with a brocade ball, surrounded by leafy peony blooms interspersed with buds, the box similarly carved with a peony scroll, the interiors and base lacquered black

A Private Japanese Collection.
Condition
There is a superficial age crack across the length of the body of the lion and a shorter one on the head of the lion. There are consolidated chips around the rim and vertical age cracks around the rim. The underside of the cover has a single minor long age crack to the lacquer. The inner rim has a 1 cm rim chip that has been restuck with a couple other rim chips around the rim. Around the foot, there are consolidated cracks. There is a 1cm chip to the foot that has been restuck. The interior of the box has a long crack around the circumference of the base. There is repainting and minor restoration to the foot.
