possibly made by Waring and Gillow, gold, dark brown lacquer, the doors incised with floral motifs, with six drawers flanked by two cupboard doors

Condition
A decorative and unusual chest of drawers in good overall appearance. Piece is more golden than the illustration suggests. Each cupboard with three adjustable wooden shelves. Interior of cupboards are 109cm high by 37cm wide. Internal measurements of drawers are 14.5cm high by 14.5cm wide by 26cm deep. Piece with two keys. Drawers operate with a spring lock mechanism - if the top drawer is locked they are all locked. Old minor marks, scratches and nicks to the lacquer, consistent with age and material. Some crazing overall. Minor losses in places, such as to the left side of the top drawers. A rare piece by this sought after designer, ready for use and display.

Chermayeff, an emigré Russian, became Director of Waring and Gillow's 'Modern Art Studio' in 1928. A six drawer example, possibly the current lot, was sold: Sotheby's Monaco, Arts Décoratifs du XXe Siècle, 23 April 1989, lot 699.
