Pope took a careful interest in the affairs of his half-sister and her family, who had serious money problems caused in part by anti-Catholic legislation. The dates, locations, and other details suggest this letter was written in 1739, and it probably relates to Pope's attempts to get Magdalen's eldest son Michael a commission in the Army.
