John Haviland, 1632, 4to (183 x 133mm.), with initial blank but without final blank, woodcut initial on A3 recto coloured in hand, modern half morocco over paper-covered boards, browned, hinges crudely repaired with tape, joints cracked, modern ownership inscription in ink on front endpaper (2)

The most popular of Bacon's literary works, the Essays appeared first in 1597 with only ten contributions. The 1625 edition was the first complete edition, containing 58 essays, and was the last to appear in the author's lifetime.
