explaining that the caves at Caldey Island have already been described to the Geological Society and discussing specimens ("...With respect to the Birds beaks, I will when stronger get them examined..."), 3 pages, 8vo, address panel with postal marks and complete red wax seal impression, 12 Upper Gower Street, 20 November 1840, small portion of paper cut away barely affecting text, some adhesive residue on final blank

Darwin had written to Smith on 15 August about the recent discovery of fossilised skeletons at Caldey (here spelled Caldy) island off the Pembrokeshire coast, and Smith had replied answering Darwin's questions about the find. This letter is unpublished.
