Catalogue Note

Frankie Morris in her study of Tenniel entitled Artist of Wonderland (Charlottesville, 2005) identifies the Punch illustration as dating from 1870. She reproduces this uncut block as evidence of Tenniel's skill at dark and light contrasts when drawing on wood. Tenniel's illustrations to The Merchant of Venice are, apparently, unrecorded. They appear to date from 1869.
