Catalogue Note

First edition of this ode, "composed or supposed to be composed" on the morning of the day appointed for national thanksgiving' for the victory against France (from a letter by Wordsworth to Southey, 1816). This is among the first of the conservative, patriotic poems that characterized Wordsworth's later years.

"When uncut in the original paper wrappers the First Edition of Thanksgiving Ode is a rare book. Apparently a large majority of the copies printed were employed, together with Peter Bell, The Waggoner, and The River Duddon to form the supplementary volume [dated 1820] to the Poems of 1815." [Wise p. 103].
