Catalogue Note

Inscribed by Trotsky on flyleaf, "To Comrade Julius Jesmer with best wishes Leon Trotsky 21 viii 1937 Coyoácan". This was Trotsky's final work, written in Norway in 1936, at the time when Stalin's purges of Old Bolsheviks was reaching its peak; soon after Trotsky was put on trial by the Norwegian government (under pressure from Stalin) and granted asylum by Mexico, which he reached early in 1937. His stay in Coyoácan was at the house of Diego Rivera.
