Catalogue Note

A fine collection of military memoirs and journals, including the remarkable journal of Field Marshal Wilhelm von Freytag (1720-1798), which, as a note on the later cover explains, was presented to ernst August II, Crown Prince of Hanover and Duke of Cumberland, in December 1895. Freytag fought under Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in the Seven Years' War, including at the Battle of Minden, and later acted as a crucial intermediary between the Hanoverian army and London, reaching the rank of Field Marshal in the Hanoverian Army in 1792.  It was under Freytag's supervision, in Hanover in 1791, that Prince Ernest Augustus and his brother Prince Adolphus received their military training.
