REMARKABLE COLLECTION OF PAPERS, LETTERS, ACCOUNTS, AND OTHER DOCUMENTS

comprising: c.15 autograph documents by Hülsemann, including a 7-page autograph account of his life and career in the army, detailing, among other events, his injury from a cannonball at the battle of Salamanca on 22 July 1812, his participation in the Battle of Vitoria on 21 June 1813 and his taking command of the Hanoverian Landwehr Bataillon Quakenbrück during the Battle of Waterloo, and c.5 autograph letters signed; a 2-page autograph letter to Hülsemann, signed, by Lieutenant August Wahrendorf of the 1st Light Battalion, dated Tournai, 14 March 1815; a 3-page manuscript "Pay List of the 4th Company 1st Light Battalion KG Legion. From 25th September to 24th October 1814"; a 3-page manuscript "Return [for the 4th Company 1st Light Battalion KG Legion] shewing the Number of Serjeants, Buglemens and Rank and File, whose Periods of Service have expired...on or before the 1st November 1814", Ostend 6 November 1814; a letter from Major Timaeus(?) to Major Hans Bussche detailing the award of two-and-a-half years' pay to Captain Hülsemann and other officers "in consideration of their wounds", 17 September 1814 ; a letter signed by Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover ("Ernst August"), congratulating Hülsemann on 50 years of military service, Hanover, 23 September 1838; copies of military correspondence concerning the awarding of the Royal Guelphic Order to Hülsemann; c.8 manuscript poems in various hands ("Seinen tapfern Kriegern die Stadt Quakenbrüch"; "Den väterländischen Kriegern am Tage ihrer Heimkehr"); a 1-page manuscript of the song "Come cheer up, my lads, 'tis to glory we steer"; the collection also including around 50 manuscript documents relating to property matters of Hülsemann's, and papers dealing with the Hülsemann estate, Lingen, 24 February 1862 and 1 October 1862; c.120 items in all, various sizes, card wrappers with manuscript label ("Kauf Merlages [?] und die Engl. Deutsche Legion betr.")

...From a Lieutenant in the Hanoverian service I was appointed Lieutenant in the First Light Battalion, King's German Legion, in England Novbr. 12. 1803., was promoted to a Captain of Company July 17. 1809, and on the day of the battle of Waterloo to a Brevet Major. I was with the Expedition to the Elbe 1805, at the taking of Copenhagen 1807; in 1808 with Genl. Sir John Moore in Portugal and Spain and 1809...at the Siege of Flushing. From the battle of Albucra in Spain to the expulsion of the French from the Peninsula, and their retreat to France, I was active present in every battle and engagement in which the First Light Battalion bore a part, except when I was laid up with my wounds, and last of all at the battle of Waterloo. Besides a wound received in the Hanoverian service, in the war of French revolution, I was thrice wounded under the command of Lord Wellington...

An extraordinary  collection of material belonging to Waterloo veteran Heinrich Friedrich Hülsemann (b.1774), Captain of the 4th Company 1st Light Battalion, King's German Legion (1814), subsequently Major, Landwehr Battalion 3rd Duke of York's, Quakenbrück (1815), and later Commandant at Lingen.
