Catalogue Note

The document signed by Oliver Cromwell is a later addition to this extra-illustrated work. It is a letter of appointment on vellum signed as Lieutenant General of Ireland and Captain General of the Parliamentary forces, appointing Charles Fairfax Colonel of a Regiment of Foot, 19 August 1650, with a red wax seal impression, with a portion cut away at the lower left not affecting text. According to Lowndes' Bibliographer's Manual "This volume was printed almost expressly for illustrations; accordingly it often occurs filled with engravings".
