Catalogue Note

The title of this piece is provided, in the artist's hand, on the reverse of the board. He also notes his address as "2 Carleton Road, Tufnell", although this has been struck through. This suggests an earlier drawing than 1904 and the piece probably relates to Rackham's contributions to Bella Sidney Woolf's 'Harry and Herodotus' in Cassell's Little Folks magazine in 1900-1902. This present watercolour is presumably an example of Rackham colouring or reworking an earlier illustration. Sotheby's would like to thank Anne Stevenson Hobbs and Dorothy Gibbs for their invaluable help with this lot.
