On 19 December 1889 Dodgson visited Birmingham for a performance of Alice at Edgbaston High School. Edward Wakeling notes in Lewis Carroll's Diaries that 'a number of presentations were made to pupils at the school' (see Lewis Carroll's Diaries, Vol 8, p. 497). Lilian Deane was probably a pupil at Edgbaston High School although it is possible she was related to Henry Deane (b.1839), an Oxford academic and contemporary of Dodgson's.
