Catalogue Note

This first English edition was the first to be translated from the French, with the American edition appearing the following year. From the Earth to the Moon was the basis for the first ever science fiction film, the 1902 French film Le Voyage dans la lune directed by George Melies. It was one of the first films to employ special effects and was so popular that it was promptly pirated by Thomas Edison, who made a fortune in America from his clandestine copy.
