Description

  • An Attic Black-figured Amphora, attributed to the Manner of the Antimenes Painter
  • terracotta
  • Height 15 7/8 in. 40.3 cm.
with echinus foot and triple handles, the body painted on one side with a man and his charioteer riding in a quadriga, a woman in the background, a youth in front, and on the other side with a fight between two warriors in full armor, each wielding a spear, the ghost of a tripod in added white emblazoned on one of the shields, rays above the foot, linked lotus buds and meander below the scenes, linked palmettes below the handles, tongues on the shoulder, linked lotus buds and palmettes on the neck, a graffito under the foot.

Condition

Very good; body appears intact, neck and handles have some repair, with minor restoration along the break lines. Added white on the shield and face of the woman now gone, as well as most added red detail. Some areas of the background appear to be retouched.
