Catalogue Note

Executed in 1967, this monumental work was commissioned for the Manufacturers Hanover Trust office at the corner of Fifth Avenue at 57th Street in New York. It hung for many years in this prominent location frequented by many people in the 57th Street art community.

In the 1960s Goodnough was engaged in a search for the forms, space and colors which would satisfy his quest to arrive at a totally abstract composition. Form in Motion, one of the artist's largest and most celebrated works, is a superb example of this quest. Executed in a brilliant palette of reds and blues, the title evokes his search for carefully articulated and controlled forms which nonetheless evoke the joy of movement.
