enamelled with 'Columbia' holding a sword and shield and accompanied by an eagle within a floral border and flower sprays.

Condition
There are half inch long and quarter inch long areas of fritting to the rim edge and wear to the gilding on the rim and somewhat to the enamels. Otherwise in good condition.

Catalogue Note
Various pieces with this subject are known, all with a matte surface to the glaze suggesting that the original decoration may have been removed with acid. The present 'patriotic' decoration may have been added for the 1876 American Centennial celebration, or perhaps even later for the 150 year celebration. A similarly decorated vegetable dish and cover was sold in these rooms, February 2, 1970, lot 32; and also a pair of saucers, April 29, 1981, lot 114.
