each decorated with a mantled shield gilt with the monogram PH, within a blue enamel and gilt diaper border. Together with a teabowl for the American Market decorated with a monogram . 4 pieces.

Teabowl – has a 2 inch by 1 ΒΌ inch section of the side restored – covering breaks and probably small losses Saucers – two are in good condition, one has a 1 inch crack to the rim

Catalogue Note

Patrick Hayes (1770-1856) was the nephew and adopted heir of Captain John Barry of Philadelphia and who sailed with Barry to Canton aboard the 'Asia' in 1787. For a discussion of Hayes's subsequent voyages, see Lee, 1984, p. 148, and also the note to lot 82 in this sale.
