Catalogue Note

Gordon, 1977, p. 137, states that the present piece "carries the simple monogram 'GW' for George Washington" and compares it to a similarly-monogrammed punch bowl at Mount Vernon, illustrated by Detweiler, 1982, pl. 130. The border decoration and details of the execution of the mantled shield differ however, and it has not been possible to uncover any other evidence to support the George Washington attribution.
