Catalogue Note

Elias Hasket Derby (1739-99) of Salem, Massachusetts is perhaps the best known of the New England merchants in the American China Trade. His fleet of four of the five Salem ships engaged in the China Trade not only assured him a maritime monopoly for that port but also provided him with great financial wealth. Gordon, 1977, p. 148 suggests that this plate is from a service brought back from China on the 'Grand Turk', a ship owned by Derby and the first from Salem to reach China. Howard and Ayers, 1978, p. 493, no. 503 illustrate a plate from the service and discuss the 'Grand Turk' and her journey to China in some detail. They note also that although the ship's cargo did include "75 boxes" of porcelain there is no specific mention of a service for Hasket Derby. Soup plates from this service were sold in these rooms, January 17, 2001, lot 126 and January 16, 2003, lot 325; and plates, January 15, 2004, lot 126 and January 20, 2005, lot 49.
