Condition

The painting has been lined. There is light craquelure and pigment separation throughout, particularly to the lower third quadrant. There is some pigment discoloration to the top right area and some obvious inpainting to the sky at the top left area. There is also a small brown spot in the middle of the painting. UNDER UV LIGHT: The aforementioned inpainting is visible under the UV light. There are two spots at the lower edge whcih fluoresce, but the full extent of inpainting is unclear due to the varnish which covers the painting.

Catalogue Note

The church shown in this painting was erected in 1847. According to Crossman, 1991, p. 435, fig. 24, no major architechtural changes took place between 1847 and 1856. In 1856, the major fire of Canton burnt many of the factories down and the city was not rebuilt in the same way again.
